In May, Bloomfield Livable Streets and our neighbors at Better Streets Lawrenceville wrote a joint letter to Karina Ricks, the director of the city’s Department of Mobility & Infrastructure regarding the upcoming redesign of Smallman St. and the end of the Penn Ave. bike lanes. Below is a short recap; check out the full letter of our requests HERE.
###
Fortunately, the upcoming redesign of Smallman Street between 16th and 21st Streets presents a real opportunity for progress. This section of road is already a common bike route, as it currently represents the only practical way for bike riders to get from Downtown into the Strip. We believe this upcoming redesign is a singular opportunity to finally extend the Penn Ave bike lane east toward our neighborhoods so it can realize its full potential. Creating a safe bike route though this section of Smallman Street would also facilitate a further connection to the proposed Allegheny River Green Boulevard that would extend all the way to Lawrenceville.
Given the work being done in Lawrenceville and Bloomfield to make our neighborhoods more bikeable, we sincerely hope that the City will take the opportunity of the Smallman Street redesign to create a bikeway through the Strip District so that all of our residents can feel safe and comfortable biking to Downtown.
